Second Edition: Éliane Radigue — Occam Ocean for Orchestra + Olivia Block
Musikaliska Kvarteret, Stockholm
Poster for the "Second Edition" music festival in Stockholm, February 9-12, 2017, listing performances and venues.

ONCEIM perform the Swedish premiere of 'Occam Ocean' — Eliane Radigue's first work for Orchestra. A pioneer and figurehead of pure electronic sound, Eliane Radigue's music is unparalleled in it's radiance and aesthetic radicalism. This has continued in the series of 'Occam' pieces she has been writing for instrumentalists since 2011 having retired her fabled ARP2500 synthesizer.

Concert opens with Olivia Block performing a new solo work for piano and electronics.

Éliane Radigue is one of the most important living composers. Having produced an extraordinary and extraordinarily influential body of electronic music between the 1960s up until 2002 (despite very little public acclaim or recognition during most of this period), she then turned to composing for and with musicians and acoustic instruments. In doing so, she has created a further body of music that draws on the sonority of her earlier work whilst extending it into new realms using a very particular methodology of oral transmission that allows for exchange ‘heart-to-heart’.

ONCEIM are working at the intersection of composition and improvisation — exploring diverse modes of creation, together with active listening they invite audience into a total experience of sound. The ensemble's thirty members are all superior instrumentalists who are working towards developing their own personal creative music, frequently functioning simultaneously as composers, interpreters and improvisers. This puts them in a uniquely advantageous position for tackling the music of Eliane Radigue which is shared via oral instruction, bypassing all standards of notation in order to embrace 'the simplest, the best' way to ' express the richness developed by these kingly instruments.'

Olivia Block is a composer and media artist living in Chicago. She creates studio-based sound compositions for concerts, site-specific multi-speaker installations, scores for orchestra and chamber groups, and cinematic sound designs. Her compositions include field recordings, amplified objects, chamber and orchestral instruments, and electronic textures, and reflect her interests in ethnographic approaches to sounds and images, and “found” recorded and text-based materials.

“Finely nuanced textures of environmental material and occasional surges of sonic power blended with an elegant instrumental architecture.”-- Julian Cowley, The Wire magazine
