Two acts. Two bold voices in the rhythmic spectrum of free jazz. A night where the music is free to challenge, pulse and breathe.
[Ahmed] – the quartet of Pat Thomas, Antonin Gerbal, Joel Grip and Seymour Wright – make music of heavy rhythm, repetition and syncopation set deep into an understanding of jazz and the obscure depths of its history. The group work and rework the music of the late musician Ahmed Abdul-Malik to create a stamping, swinging, relentlessly propulsive music where profundity and physicality root right back to ecstatic feeling.
Swedish piano trio Space works with nuance, power and precision. They draw from the American free jazz tradition and contemporary classical music, creating textured, dynamic soundscapes that shift from subtle to explosive. With Lisa Ullén on piano, Elsa Bergman on double bass and Anna Lund on drums, each voice in the trio shines on its own while staying radically attuned to the others. Their latest album Embrace the Space (Relative Pitch, 2024) confirms their growing status as one of the most daring trios on today’s scene.
